Inventory Management Program

The nine-week Inventory Management Program is available to new employees in the Planning and Distribution departments. Participants — Merchandise Planning Analysts and Distribution Planning Analysts — develop a comprehensive understanding of Gap Inc.'s core business processes and the skills needed to work successfully on an Inventory Management team.

The program includes classroom education, on-the-job assignments, special projects and presentations to senior management. Participants from all brands learn together in a cross-divisional approach to training and development.

Merchandise Planning Analysts and Distribution Planning Analysts keep every store stocked while maintaining profitable inventory levels; help to determine the merchandise best suited for each location; and assist Merchandisers in planning future products and their optimum distribution. Both positions work closely with, and are part of, a cross-functional team consisting of Merchandising, Merchandise Planning, Production and Distribution.

Merchandise Planning Analyst (PA)

PAs are responsible for the financial success of one or more categories of merchandise or departments (tops, wovens, knits). Once the product is in stores, the PA reviews actual sales performance on a weekly and monthly basis, then re-projects in-season sale and inventories. The PA works with Merchandising, Distribution, Production and other planning teams.

Distribution Planning Analyst (DA)

The DA's role is critical in ensuring that the right assortment and depth of sizes and colors are available to the customers in each store while also targeting profitability. The DA works closely with Merchandising, Production, Planning and other Distribution teams. Once the product is in stores, the DA reviews actual sales performance on a weekly and monthly basis, then re-forecasts for optimal use of the inventory from both customer service and profitability viewpoints.
